When I first decided that I wanted to lose weight, I thought I would need to change almost everything about the way I lived.
That is probably how many people feel when they start. You look at your eating habits, exercise, work routine and weekends and wonder how you are ever going to fit a completely new lifestyle into your existing one.
What I eventually learned was that I did not need perfection. I needed consistency.
My Herbalife journey lasted three months, and it was not simply about drinking shakes. I changed several everyday habits at the same time. I paid more attention to what I was eating, reduced the amount of junk food I was having, drank more water, became more conscious of my protein intake and started taking my lifestyle more seriously.
Herbalife became part of that routine.
This is my personal experience and the routine I followed at the time. It should not be treated as a diet plan that everyone needs to copy. People’s nutritional requirements, health circumstances and weight management goals are different.
What I can share is what worked for me and why the routine became something I could actually stick with.
The first six weeks
For the first six weeks, I kept my normal lunch and made the biggest changes to my breakfast and evening meal.
Early morning
I started the day with Afresh powder mixed into hot water. I used three pinches, although this was simply the routine I personally followed.
I found having something as part of my morning routine made it easier for me to feel that I had started the day with a plan rather than simply eating whatever happened to be available.
Breakfast
Breakfast was deliberately simple.
I normally had oats or cornflakes with fruit juice and did not try to make breakfast complicated.
Looking back, I think simplicity was one of the reasons I could stay consistent. There were no elaborate recipes or lengthy preparations. It was just a straightforward breakfast that fitted into an ordinary morning.
Lunch
Lunch was where I kept the most flexibility.
I continued eating a normal balanced meal without imposing a long list of restrictions on myself.
That was important to me because I did not want to feel as though I was permanently “on a diet”. I still wanted to eat normal food and enjoy meals with my family.
The difference was that I became much more conscious of portions and the overall quality of what I was eating.
Evening snacks
For snacks, I generally chose fruit or sprouts.
These were easy to have available at home and were a much better fit with the routine I was trying to build than the crisps, sweets and other junk foods I had been reaching for previously.
Dinner
Dinner was where I introduced Herbalife Formula 1 together with Formula 3.
At the time, my routine was Formula 1 and Formula 3 mixed in a 3:1 ratio with around 300ml of skimmed milk.
This became one of the most convenient parts of my day because it was quick to prepare and removed the need to decide what I was going to eat when I was already tired in the evening.
Today, the exact preparation instructions can vary by product and formulation, so anyone using Formula 1 should follow the directions on the current UK product label rather than copying my old routine. Current UK Formula 1 information gives specific preparation guidance and describes it as a meal replacement shake mix for weight control and healthy nutrition.
You can see the current range of Herbalife shakes available in the UK to compare the available Formula 1 options.
From six weeks to three months
After the first six weeks, I became more comfortable with the routine and made another change.
Instead of having my previous breakfast, I started having Formula 1 and Formula 3 together, again using the 3:1 ratio that I had followed.
I continued having a normal lunch.
For my evening meal, I again used Formula 1 and Formula 3, but this time prepared them with hot water and had a piece of fruit alongside them.
That gave my day a fairly predictable structure:
A simple morning routine.
A shake based breakfast.
A normal lunch.
Fruit or sprouts as snacks.
A shake based evening meal.
The simplicity suited me.
I didn’t have to spend every morning thinking about what I should eat or spend every evening preparing a complicated meal. At the same time, I was still eating a normal meal at lunchtime.
Today, anyone considering a similar approach should look at the current product directions and nutritional information rather than relying on the quantities I used years ago.
Protein became more important to me
Another change I made during those three months was paying much more attention to protein.
I started including more soya based foods in my diet because I wanted to make sure I was getting enough protein while I was changing my eating habits.
I was particularly conscious of maintaining a good diet rather than simply trying to eat less.
That distinction matters.
Weight management should not simply mean cutting food out indiscriminately. The quality and nutritional value of the food you do eat still matter.
Formula 3 also became part of my routine. The current MakeMeHealthier product range describes Herbalife Personalised Protein Powder, also known as Formula 3, as a protein product that can be added to a shake or used according to the product directions.
For me, adding protein to my routine was one part of a much bigger change in the way I approached food.
I also made some changes outside the shakes
This is probably the part of my story that is easiest to overlook.
The shakes were only one element.
I also stopped eating the kind of junk food that had gradually become normal for me. I became much more conscious of what I was putting into my body and tried to make better choices throughout the day.
I was also a big coffee drinker.
At one stage, I was having around three cups a day. During my three month course, I reduced that to one cup.
That might sound like a small change, but for me it was a meaningful one because it showed that I was willing to change habits rather than simply look for one product to solve everything.
That was really the lesson I took from the whole experience.
The product was part of the routine.
The routine was part of the lifestyle change.
And the lifestyle change was where the real work happened.
What about water?
I also made a conscious effort to drink considerably more water during those three months.
At the time, I was drinking around five to six litres a day.
That was what I personally did, but I would not suggest that amount as a general target for everybody. Fluid requirements vary from person to person, and drinking excessively is not automatically better.
The important lesson for me was simply to pay attention to hydration rather than spending most of the day drinking coffee and very little water.
Today, I would recommend that anyone considering a structured nutrition or weight management plan looks at their own circumstances and follows appropriate professional or product guidance rather than copying another person’s fluid intake.
I used a simple routine rather than constantly changing plans
One reason I think I was able to stay with the programme was that I did not keep changing it.
There are so many diets and weight loss programmes available that it is easy to jump from one idea to another.
One week you remove carbohydrates.
The next week you try fasting.
Then you buy different supplements.
Then you stop everything because you are tired of following complicated rules.
I didn’t want that.
I wanted a routine that I could repeat.
That made life easier.
I knew roughly what breakfast would be.
I knew what my lunch would look like.
I knew what I could have as a snack.
I knew what I was having in the evening.
There was less daily decision making.
For anyone considering Herbalife today, MakeMeHealthier’s Herbalife weight management products provide a useful place to look at the available options and understand how different products and plans are presented.
Three months later
After three months, I had reached the weight and BMI goal I had set for myself.
The original version of my story gives a specific BMI figure, but that figure is not suitable to reproduce because it appears to be an error. More importantly, my individual result should not be presented as a promise of what somebody else will achieve.
What I can say is that I was pleased with the change.
For me, the biggest result was not simply seeing a different number.
I had developed better habits.
I was making more conscious food choices.
I was eating less junk food.
I was paying more attention to protein and hydration.
I had reduced my coffee intake.
And I had found a routine that fitted into my everyday life.
That made the experience feel sustainable rather than like a short burst of dieting.
Did Herbalife do all the work?
No.
I would not describe my experience that way.
Herbalife products were part of the programme I followed, particularly Formula 1 and Formula 3, but I also changed my eating habits and became more conscious of my lifestyle.
That distinction is important.
There is no sensible reason to believe that simply buying a product automatically produces a particular result. What matters is how the product fits into someone’s overall diet, activity levels and routine.
The current Herbalife UK information also presents Formula 1 within the context of an energy restricted diet, a balanced diet and regular physical activity rather than as a stand alone solution.
That is much closer to how I would describe my own experience.
Why I decided to become an Herbalife Member
After completing the three month programme, I decided to take out a Herbalife membership and became an Independent Herbalife Member.
At that stage, my intention was not to build a business.
I simply wanted access to Herbalife products for myself and my family.
That decision came after I had already used the products and developed a routine around them. In other words, I was not deciding whether I liked the concept in theory. I had already experienced how the products fitted into my own daily life.
For anyone considering Herbalife for the first time, it is worth doing some research before choosing products. The Herbalife FAQ on MakeMeHealthier covers common questions about products, plans and using Herbalife as part of a wider lifestyle.
Would I recommend it?
Based on my own experience, yes, I would recommend looking into Herbalife if someone is interested in convenient nutritional products and wants to see whether they fit into their lifestyle.
But I would make one important point.
I would not recommend simply copying my exact three month routine.
Food, exercise, weight management and nutrition are personal. What suited me at the time may not suit another person.
I would also strongly recommend paying attention to current product labels because formulations and preparation instructions can change. For example, the current UK Formula 1 information provides specific preparation directions that are different from the quantities in my original routine.
The better approach is to understand what each product is for, consider how it fits into your normal diet and then build a routine that you can realistically maintain.
What I learned from the experience
Looking back, I don’t think there was one magic part of the programme.
It was the combination of several fairly ordinary changes.
I drank more water.
I cut down my coffee.
I reduced junk food.
I paid more attention to protein.
I became more organised about meals.
I introduced Formula 1 and Formula 3 into my routine.
And I tried to stay consistent for three months instead of expecting everything to happen within a couple of weeks.
That last point is probably the most important.
Changing your weight is not something that needs to become an obsession. It is much easier to stay motivated when the goal is to build better habits rather than punish yourself for every meal that doesn’t go according to plan.
My biggest takeaway
If there is one thing I would take from my Herbalife journey, it is that a weight management programme is much easier to follow when it fits into real life.
I didn’t completely stop eating normal food.
I didn’t spend hours preparing specialist meals.
I didn’t try to follow an impossibly complicated diet.
I created a routine that was simple enough for me to repeat.
Herbalife products were one part of that routine, but they worked alongside the other changes I made.
That is also why I believe people should look beyond the product itself. The more useful question is not simply, “Will this product work?”
It is:
“Can I build a healthy routine around this that I can actually maintain?”
For me, the answer was yes.
And three months later, I was very pleased with where that routine had taken me.
